I am wondering if I’m going to be able to teach Chandler to drive. He is a week old as of yesterday, so he’ll be sixteen in...2033.

I’m pretty certain that autonomous vehicles will be mostly the norm by then. I’d say the most people will need to know is when/how to take over in the event of some type of malfunction with the vehicle’s autonomous capabilities. Or when the systems are just confused.

I am hoping to have some type of old clunker to still tinker with, so hopefully I can still bond with him over that. After all, there are still horse enthusiasts around. The truly dedicated people didn’t let the hobby die out.

I hope car guys/girls can do the same.

It seems like there are a lot of issues facing the autonomous car and at this point not a guarantee. You can’t teach a computer how to make ethical decisions, you can only program it.

So program it with the decision you’d make. Well probably any decision it makes would be better since most drivers aren’t making ethical decisions, they are just panicking, with luck you can avoid negative consequences altogether via greater awareness and faster and more rational responses.

I drove a 17 year old metro last year. I’m sure there will be regular cars in 16 years. There are enough lower and middle class that can’t afford an autonomous car. I can’t.

Well there will always be go karts (though they might be electric). In any event, I am highly optimistic about the self driving future, but even by 2033 I really doubt self-driving cars will be mandatory. I could imagine self-driving cars being mandatory for highway travel or something along those lines, but given how fundamental driving is to our society, I can’t see a ban coming that quickly.

It’s not even going to be a question of whether you can buy one. When it hits critical mass, you won’t own a car at all, you’ll have a subscription like a cell phone bill. The quality of the vehicle will be based on your plan, nothing more. Poor people will have them subsidized just like you see with cell phones and they will replace all non-fixed public transit.

It’ll end so much driving-related activity in the market that it’ll be unreal. Almost every driving job will be gone, an entire class of lawyer will be out of a job, a huge swath of the insurance industry will no longer be needed, traffic police will be obsolete, local government largess paid by traffic tickets will end, medical facilities will see a dramatic drop in demand that will put many forms of medical professionals out of work, indie auto shops will close, fuel consumption will decrease (and it’ll be bought at massive contract rates like we see in the airline industry), etc. Economically, it will be totally transformative...

Is Chandler going to be fabulously wealthy? Because the first marketable driverless cars should be hitting around then...at Tesla level and up pricing.

I’ll be the last person to tell you your kid can’t make it big(ly!). But planning for that like the nine figure checks have already cleared isn’t the best idea. I’ll only say that 2033 is a near-future movie away. Enjoy the little one years while you can because *they don’t like being hugged and kissed so much anymore by non-potential mates after puberty hits - and THAT day is much closer than the first driverless Maybach S-Class

*really hate that I get to have the separation anxiety a parent has without being a parent to my special little one. BUT ITS JUST NOT FAIR, I NEED MORE TIME THAN A COUPLE OF YEARS, COME ON NATURE CUT ME SOME SLACK HERE!

Ha. My papaw taught me at age 14-15 with his old ‘97 F-150. We went through farmland roads over in the river bottoms of Indiana. Good memories indeed.
